The Dominican Republic is the second largest island in the Caribbean and one of the most diverse. This island has become known for its welcoming hospitality, beautiful scenery and white sandy beaches. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the north and the Caribbean Sea on the south, The Dominican Republic has nearly 1000 miles of coastline and 250 miles of some of the best beaches, magnificent hotels and villas. A geographically diverse island, the Dominican Republic is home to the region’s tallest mountain peak, Pico Duarte, as well as the Caribbean’s largest lake and lowest elevation – Lake Enriquillo.

We definitely recommend a visit to the island's capital – Santo Domingo. This colonial city, recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site, is where you can explore the cobblestone lanes that lead to many small museums, shops, restaurants and bars that are tucked away on every street. Other top destinations include Samana, La Romana, Puerto Plato and Punta Cana.
Punta Cana boasts 25 miles of white sand, swaying coconut trees and crystal clear waters and is located on the western side of the island. La Romana is the island's third largest city situated on the south of the island, about a one-hour drive from Punta Cana Airport.
A private villa is the perfect base from which to explore the island whilst enjoying the luxury of concierge, housekeeping staff and private chefs if required.
Visiting the island’s capital Santa Domingo is a must. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is filled with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and lively plazas. Particular points of interest include Catedral Primada de América, the first cathedral in the Americas, and Alcázar de Colón, the palace of Christopher Columbus' son.
The island has plenty of fabulous beaches to enjoy but some of our favourites include Punta Cana, probably the most famous beach, known for its white sand, turquoise water and plenty of watersports. For those looking for quieter spots, Playa Rincon is a beautiful untouched beach, and Bahía de las Águilas, a hidden gem with crystal-clear water and no crowds.
Immerse yourself in local culture by trying some famous dishes including Mangu which is mashed plantains, a breakfast staple, La Bandera Dominicana, a traditional meal of rice, beans, and meat, and of course all the fresh seafood and tropical fruits.
The Dominican Republic is a nature lovers paradise. With plenty to do in the outdoors, some of the activities we recommend are exploring Los Haitises National Park, a hidden treasure of mangroves, caves, and unique rock formations, hiking to El Limón Waterfall, a stunning 52m waterfall surrounded by lush jungle, and visiting Jarabacoa (the Dominican Alps) known for hiking, white-water rafting, and waterfalls in the mountains.
The Dominican Republic has several small islands dotted around the coastline and can be reached by boat. Saona Island is a protected nature reserve with pristine beaches, palm trees, and clear blue waters, Catalina Island is the perfect spot for diving and snorkelling, with coral reefs teeming with marine life, and Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island) is a dreamy island retreat, perfect for a day trip from Samana.
The island has plenty of golf courses to choose from, a couple of our favourites include Teeth of the Dog in Casa de Campo which is known as one of the best courses in the Caribbean, and Punta Espada in Cap Cana, A Jack Nicklaus-designed oceanfront course.
During these months the weather will be lovely and warm with average temperatures of 25–30°C, low humidity and sunny days with low chances of rain. It is perfect for beach days, snorkelling and exploring the island, although crowds will be high, particularly during the festive season.
The shoulder season is also a great time to visit, with warm temperatures (27–32°C) and scattered afternoon showers. The landscape will be lush and green and crowds will be lower.
As with much of the Caribbean, the wet season is caracterised by hot and humid weather (30–35°C) with a higher chance of showers, particularly in the afternoon. Hurricane season peaks from August to October. This time of year is great for surfers as the waves in Cabarete are at their highest.
