The island, although only 166 square miles (about the size of the Isle of Wight) is incredibly diverse in nature. The beautifully rugged northern and eastern coasts are fringed by the Atlantic and popular with surfers and hikers, whilst the centre of the island is largely covered with the lush green vegetation of sugar cane.
The southern and western coasts are framed by the Caribbean Sea, a much calmer sister to the Atlantic, and this is where the majority of tourism development has taken place. Barbados is blessed with stunning beaches on all coasts and there are no private beaches, so explore and enjoy!
There is a huge variety of things to see and do. If you can tear yourself away from the beach or your private villa in Barbados, there are world heritage sites, museums, gardens, caves, shopping, rum tours, and even zip-lining for the adrenaline junkies!
Barbados is home to more than 12 golf courses, an abundance of tennis courts, diving and water sports. Enjoy a catamaran cruise where you will swim with turtles, or take a trip on a submarine and explore the underwater world.

Barbados is a diner’s delight! For a small island, it packs a massive punch with regards to the variety of cuisine available and pretty much any food can be found here. From à la carte oceanfront restaurants, casual beach bars, and fresh street food, and even the fast food is excellent.
The west coast is dotted with some fabulous fine dining options, and be sure to check out first and second street in Holetown which has a variety of restaurants. The south coast is no exception, albeit somewhat more casual, our favourites include Champers, Tapas and the causal Harlequin in St Lawrence gap
For nightlife, the second street in Holetown is the West Coast spot or the popular St Lawrence Gap on the South, Barbados has some fantastic musical talent so be sure to take in a local live band.
Along the way, stop in a beach bar or rum shop for a rum punch, a cold local beer or a cocktail!

If you want to learn more about the history of Barbados, as well as trying some delicious rum, then a visit to St Nicholas Abbey is a must. This historic plantation has a scenic train that provides spectacular views of the wild east coast, a tour through the main house and sugar cane processing area as well as a rum tasting at the end. The shady cafe is a lovely place to have lunch, particularly when a local calypso player is there to serenade.
No visit to Barbados would be complete without a trip to the south coast institution, the Oistins Fish Fry. While you can try local seafood here most days, it is Friday night that things really come alive. We recommend arriving early to watch the sunset and then grabbing a spot at one of the local vendors serving fresh grilled seafood like marlin, snapper and mahi mahi. Wash it down with a Banks beer or rum punch while listening to calypso music.
There are some wonderful gardens to visit in Barbados. Our favourites include Hunte’s Gardens, a quirky tropical paradise in a sinkhole, and Andromeda Gardens with its beautiful views of the wild east coast (RHS members get free entry). We also recommend a visit to the Barbados Wildlife Reserve where you can walk among free roaming monkeys, peacocks, deer and tortoises.
Barbados has several world class golf courses but some of the most famous include Sandy Lane, a favourite of celebrities, Royal Westmoreland, and Apes Hill with its scenic greens and lush tropical backdrop.
At the very top of the northern coast of Barbados, visitors will find the Animal Flower Cave. As long as the waves are not ‘waving’ too much (as the owner likes to say) you can descend into this spectacular sea cave where you can swim in natural rock pools as see the colourful sea anemones (animal flowers) that live in the pools. You can also enjoy a meal at the cliffside restaurant and walk along the cliffs for spectacular views of the Atlantic.
One of our favourite things to do is to get out onto the water. There are many companies to choose from either for a small group or private catamaran or yacht and you will be able to swim and snorkel to your hearts content. The first stop usually includes swimming with the turtles and seeing the ship wrecks at Carlisle Bay, then leisurely heading along the west coast to enjoy a delicious lunch and afternoon at sea.
